The Waiting

Status: In Progress
Genre: Young Adult/Horror
Theme: Coming of age, Faith

Frankie’s stepfather, Howard, has abused him for his entire life. Frankie dreads coming home after school. He especially fears falling asleep; he has become an insomniac, terrified of being awoken to his step father’s fetid breath.

Howard becomes gravely ill and slowly shrinks and withers into a corpse of a man, reflecting, Frankie feels, his soiled and evil soul. Frankie hates to visit him in the hospital. Finally, the day Frankie has craved for so long arrives; Howard is dying.

Frankie’s mother takes him to see Howard for the very last time- or so he thinks. Howard unexpectedly pulls Frankie close, and whispers in his ear, “I’ll be waiting for you, Frankie.” Frankie continues to see Howard after his death- in his dreams, in the shadows out of the corner of his eye.

The following year, Frankie develops a rare, fatal cancer. In the short time he has left, Frankie must find a way to defeat Howard. The visions of Howard come more often now, even in the waking hours. He is terrified to die- he knows Howard is waiting.
